2008 World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo
The 2008 World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo, the most prestigious event in the backgammon world, ended up on Tuesday, July 16 after 11 days of non-stop backgammon action. The desired world title was won by Lars Trabolt of Denmark, number 16 in the Giants of Backgammon.
The 33rd Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship took place in Monaco, Monte Carlo with hundreds of backgammon champions wannabes and other fans of the game from all over the world. The 2008 World Backgammon Champion was part of the largest national team, counted around 40 Danish backgammon players. The Japanese group stood out among the rest when choosing to receive their trophies wearing kimonos. But the Fortis World Backgammon Championship was won by the Greek team.
2008 Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship consisted of three major divisions: Championship, Intermediate and Beginners, each one divided into three competitions: Main, Consolation and the Last Chance. The Championship division, with 199 entrants had to open two Consolation competitions for the dropouts of the first tournament. In addition, the backgammon champions included lots of other backgammon competitions such as Jackpots tourneys and Blitz events as well as the traditional awards ceremony, and cocktail parties.
