Backgammon in Costa Rica
The 7th Tournament of the Americas of the Costa Rican Backgammon Association (CRBA) is planned to take place in August 2008 at one of Costa Rica seaside resorts. The 6th backgammon tournament in the series took place in 1999.
The Costa Rican Backgammon Association, one of the strongest backgammon organizations in Latin America has been inactive for the last decade. In 2008, the CRBA is returning to action by forming a new website and renewing the Tournament of the Americas series.
Apparently, backgammon has been pretty popular in Costa Rica and Latin America throughout the past decade, mainly due to the spryness of the CRBA. The previous backgammon tournaments in the series drew between a couple of hundreds of entrants from Costa Rica, Peru, Brazil, etc. Held in central locations such as Hotel Cariar near Juan Santamaria International Airport, or in a luxurious resort in Mexico, the Tournament of the Americas had no problem drawing tourists and backgammon players who came especially for the event from North America and Europe.
To celebrate the revival of the Tournament of the Americas, the CRBA plans to have the tournaments broadcast on TV by the World Series of Backgammon and run online satellite tournaments for the event at one of the leading backgammon sites. To cut down on the players' expenses on accomodation, the 7th Tournament of the Americas will be held off the tourist season around mid August.
Watch out for updates on the 7th Tournament of the Americas exact date and location.
