It was not the first time The World Is Big and Salvation Lurks around the Corner won prestigious awards in a film festival, nor isn't the first festive backgammon tournament with the participation of the movie crew. The World Is Big won the Audience Award in the Zurich Film Festival and in the Sofia International Film Festival. In the latter, it also won the Best Bulgarian Feature Film Award, and later that year, the movie grabbed the Jury Award at the Bergen International Film Festival. At the same opportunities, the movie backgammon team played against German movie director Wim Wenders and Istanbul based oriental psychedelic band Baba Zula.
