"Backgammon is an extremely popular social game in Jamaica", said Macbeath, the backgammon tournament director (to SportsJamaica), "and the High Stakes tournament affords those who wish to play the game to a higher level an opportunity to pit their wits against the best in the land", and outside the land. The winner of the former High Stakes event, German/Iranian Chiva Taffazzoli and the founder of the World Backgammon Association (WBA), is expected at this year's event, what "has driven the local players to improve their game".
The participation is limited to 32 players, though no pre registration is required. Starting on Saturday, April 24 at 10 AM, the backgammon tournament will be held in the round robin and knockout formats. At the beginning, the 32 players will be assigned to 8 groups, and after all the possible combinations are explored the 16 leading players will move up to the next stage "to a straight knockout competition." In addition to the main event, the tournament comers will be entertained with variety of activities including a musical concert, an art exhibit and a Eurostars Motors exhibition, presenting the newest Mercedes Benz models.
