- The Monte Carlo World Backgammon Championship is an annual tradition going on since 1976, when the European Open Championships was integrated with the Bahamas World Championship, and became a loadstone for mostly, but not solely, European backgammon players.
- The first undisputed World Backgammon Champion was Joe Dwek of the UK, who at the same year published Backgammon for Profit, a book on backgammon problems and suggested solutions.
- The last player who gained the prestigious title and the grand prize was Lars Trabolt of Denmark who defeated his opponent, Mario Sequeira of Portugal in a 25-point final in the 2008 World Backgammon Championship in Monte Carlo.
