Played Life Stakes Backgammon and Died
A 23 years old man of Moscow was stabbed to death after an agreement to play baggamon on his life was taken too seriously by the opponent. It all begun when the victim and the executer shared a cab, and ended when the latter, a 35 years old ex-prisoner, asked his neighbor to assist him in clearing a dead corpse from his South Muscovite apartment.
The Russian news agencies report on an unfamiliar variation of backgammon, combining the classic old board game with a Russian roulette. According to the rules, once the players have agreed to put the life on stake, the loser must die.
Vasily Lobozov of Moscow became the first known victim of this bizarre backgammon variation. The young man was introduced to his play partner, Sergei Smirnitsky, in a shared taxi ride, and then invited to the guy's flat. Impressed by his host handmade backgammon board, Vasily offered to play a game. Sergei insisted that the backgammon game will be played on real money. After broke Vasily has flipped his pockets looking for some dough, Sergei had settled to settle on a different stake – life.
Whether absentminded or certain of his backgammon skills, Vasily agreed to play backgammon on his life. Less than twenty minutes later, he was lying on the floor lifeless, after his new acquaintance and backgammon opponent had stabbed him in the neck five times. Sergei's shocked neighbor, who was asked for help in getting rid of the body, called the police, which arrested Sergei for murder. Talking to the investigators, he did not deny the charges and declared: “We agreed that he who lost would die. He lost.”
